Do advertisements do more harm than good?
« on: March 28, 2010, 12:58:20 AM »
Advertising has grown to be an industry worth many billions of dollars across the world. Almost all public space has some advertisements in sight and all forms of media, from newspapers to the internet, are also filled with adverts. Whilst this helps companies sell their produces, and helps consumers to learn what is on offer, many believe that this huge amount of advertising can be harmful. It may make people want too much, or things that they cannot have, or it might make them feel inadequate when they don't have something. Research shows that children can be particularly open to these kinds of risk.

Fully agree... mass media is brainwashing people into wanting things they cant afford and often dont even need... I have a lot more to say on this subject but it would be pretty blunt and... well... not kosher shall we say...

Well I don't really see a problem with it. I mean it's not right, but at least everyone is given a chance to voice their product and there fore opinion to a large audience. Without advertising, the mass media and government would have complete control over the general population, but with advertising messages like "Smoking is bad for you" and such and such have a chance to get out to the public. Granted it has probably done more harm than good, but I don't want a world where all of my eggs are in the government's basket, especially in such a corrupt era.
Laziness, or lack of effort, can best be avoided by the effort to avoid effort in the most effortless way.

I really wish we see advertising for things we can actually buy. Prescription drugs, adverts for Boeing should be a no-no.

First of all advertisements are good being that when you are supported by advertisements it helps relay new products and the economy expand and grow government needs people to spend money in order for prosper.
only things that people need to differentiate is the difference between useless ad media and relative things all goes back to Necessity vs Needs.
