Any anime similar to Death Note or Code Geass?

I'm looking for anime like Code Geass and Death Note. One where you can't guess what the next move of the character will be and with a really intelligent storyline.

Are there any anime, having a protagonist like that, with similar conflict (fighting chess-game style, with sacrifices and such)?

Monster might be something of interest... supremely evil villains... mind-games...

Umm... lessee... You might like Basilisk... but its not quite the same... very few mind-games...

Eden of the East could be interesting for you too... some bloodshed and mind-games... same with Spice and Wolf...

One Outs... and Kaiji... and Akagi.... dont remember much bloodshed in there... but the mind games were super...

Should be enough to keep you busy...

I cant believe I did not mention Legend of the Galactic Heros... thats probably a felony in some parts of the world... battle of wits between two super smart guys... political intrigue at its best... Saiunkoku Monogatari is also not bad in that sense... but its a bit too shoujo for your taste I think....

Monster and Legend of the Galactic Heroes are a must watch.

You might also enjoy Satoshi Kon's work such as - Paprika, Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent.

Edit: If you are looking for a manga then I would suggest - Liar Game.
