Favorite "Slice of life" anime
« on: March 22, 2007, 02:44:50 PM »

A "slice of life" is a category for a story that portrays a "cut-out" sequence of events in a character's life. It may or may not contain any real plot, and often has no exposition, action, conflict, or denouement, with an open ending. It usually tries to depict the every-day life of ordinary people. The term slice of life is actually a (more or less) dead metaphor: it often seems as if the author had taken a knife and cut out a slice of the lives of some characters, apparently not bothering at all where the cuts were made.

Discuss it here.

Simply put, these are anime which feature people just doing their everyday, ordinary thing. Sometimes it's the little things that mean the most to us.

I consider the following anime series/movie to be in this category:

  • Azumanga Daioh
  • Fruits Basket
  • Haibane Renmei
  • Heidi
  • Kimagure Orange Road TV
  • Kiki's Delivery Service
  • Millennium Actress
  • Piano
  • The Place Promised in Our Early Days
  • Tokyo Godfathers
  • Voices of a Distant Star

@Dylan: You must have seen Haibane Renmei (Ailes Grise) and Tokyo Godfathers, as both have been aired on Animax.

@Kyo: From the list except for Piano, and Voices of a Distant Star, I have seen the rest.

And I would put Kino's Journey in this category as well.

In that case...

I've seen
- Kino's journey (really... it takes place in a fantasy world),
- Heidi (It was good)

Another I think would fit here is Futari Ecchi. I know it's all adulterated... but I've given it much though... Futari Ecchi is definitely a "Slice of Life". (Sounds too convincing sometimes...)

Well I just saw this one anime..... Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien..... not bad as such.... but the main male lead kinda pissed me off........

It is a 'slice of life' anime too...... adult themes are prevalent in many episodes.... but the way the peoples relationships are depicted is what really makes it kinda realistic........

I frankly did not like the ending...... even though I know that it was only possible for it to end that way........

Seen em all this time around... Honey and Clover beats out the rest... though Genshiken puts up a helluva good fight... Nana was also pretty good...
