The greatest Ninja/Samurai Anime
« on: April 09, 2010, 06:27:38 PM »
This thread is dedicated to ninja, samurai, and all anime that portrays them. The purpose of this thread is to mention the GREATEST ninja and samurai anime that you have ever and may ever see. Please discuss the anime for both the people who have seen it and for those who might not be familiar with it. And one more thing, if you have posted something rellevant in another thread that contributes to the discussion here, feel free to give us a link, we would appreciate the convenience.

Now to my worthless opinion.
I would say the greatest I've seen is Blood reign: curse of the Yoma. It is pretty solid all around, good action, good animation for its age, nice story, some nice character designs especially the insectoid demons. I also like how the main character kills a lot of his enemies by shoving his claw down their throats.

ninja scroll the movie (the tv series is mostly disappointing) has the best action i've ever seen in the genre. I like the stylized violence and superhuman abilities of the antagonist ninja.

[update: Samurai X - Trust is number one]

What about you, what are the best you've ever seen?

It's debatable, but Naruto is truly epic. And Samurai X is amazing, as well.

Samurai Champloo's okay... Samurai Deeper Kyo's awesome, though.

Blade of the Immortal pawns all kyo. BotI is as good as Kenshin - maybe better. BotI storyline may have drifted downhill at the present instant - and that too, I feel only at volume 17 onwards did the story get a bit downhill; but BotI as a complete manga scores more than Kenshin on my list of Samurai Manga.

As far as ninja storylines proceed, I have read only Naruto (manga), so I can't really say much. Unless...if you combine Ninja and Mecha together, I could say Ninja Robots :P

@ Arctic - You....liked Samurai Deeper Kyo?! You liked it more than Champloo? 0_o'

Gah! I hate you anime-living people. Read some manga too >.<'' I haven't yet watched BotI anime - I have just left it lying on my iPod. Well, just consider my post with relation to Manga.

I hate to say this... but I have probably trumped you in terms of the quantity of manga I have read as well.... I am currently following in excess of 20 series by last count...

AceViper - Well, I've probably seen more of Champloo than Deeper Kyo, actually. In terms of fighting, Champloo was really good, but I found it a bit annoying at times, for some reason...

I havent' SEEN SDK, actually, only read the manga - but yeah, I did find the Champloo Anime a bit boring - on the 14th episode, right now. But if I had to compare the SDK manga to Champloo Anime - I would still pick Champloo. I found SDK a bit...monotonous.

P.S _ My name has a small v in it - Aceviper :P :) :D

Anything (even BotI) can be called monotonous compared to the wildness of Champloo, which changes genre almost every other episode... and I still find it inexplicable that people found Champloo boring...

If SDK is monotonous, then that means IY is just 20-30 chapters or 6-8 epis running on loop till whenever... Not that BotI is that much different from SDK when it comes to the degree of novelty in its story arcs...

Well, kyo, even though I have said that the anime for Champloo was boring - I have admitted (quite a few times befroe, too) that I loved the Manga - the Champloo manga was absolute fun. But when they tried making episodes on their own - few of those stories turned out to be bugging - like for egs:

Spoiler for Hidden:
The one in which they get captured and Mugen has to deliver a severed head to a near by Poilce Station (or something) - but gets intercepted by Bandits (who turn out to be Warrior Priests) - and in the end, end up burning an entire Opium Field - hence going super-high and so on and so forth....

That is an example of boring, for me. Maybe my mood might vary sometime in the future and I may like this same episode...but yeah, I'm very moody. >_>

Like other people have said, nothing can beat Samurai X/Rurouni Kenshin, especially the masterpiece that is the Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal OVA. Other shows that I loved were Samurai 7 and Ran the Samurai Girl. If you're looking for a recent show, I'd suggest Sengoku Basara (kind of over the top but still hours of mindless fun) and House of Five Leaves.
