This film was difficult for some to grasp.  Although I would argue that it couldn't be any easier.
The art was absolutely wonders especially if you appreciate good artwork (not only in an animation sense, but in a Fine Arts sense.)  I only wish there were a lot more films like this.
Katsura Otomo creator of Akira, screenwriter for Metropolis, and 10-years in the making Steamboy.  Not much of a legacy to be proud of.  Only 3 films within a 3 decade span of time?

I found the movie interesting. My children liked it very much. Of course, as a teacher with some experience in physics, I found myself evaluating the plot, and found the steamball lacking. Compressibility is one thing. Steam creating pressure is a fine idea. But compressing gas generally creates a very cold liquid. And that little ball didn't have enough mass or volume to power such a large plant.

I'd have been a bit better impressed if the physics could have been a bit more realistic. But they don't hire science people to write scripts.
