RECLECTIONS OVA SPOILER

Note Spoilers follow
Kenshin eventually becomes ravaged by an unknown disease that is much like leprosy (the writers have admitted there is no medical explanation for his condition). To share his pain, Kaoru convinces Kenshin to infect her with the disease through sexual intercourse. Kenshin then leaves to go assist in the First Sino-Japanese War (primarily over control of Korea) as he had promised the Meiji Government, not fighting and killing, but instead helping people.

After the war's end, Sanosuke discovers a very ill Kenshin sometime after he'd fallen overboard on a ship. Sanosuke arranges Kenshin's return to Tokyo by boat. Upon arriving, a bed ridden Kaoru, almost on instinct, gets up to walk outside the dojo on the cherry blossom path, seeing her husband struggling with each step to meet her.

The two finally meet, and Kenshin collapses into her arms as he clutches her to him. They end up beneath a cherry blossom tree, where Kaoru tells him that they will invite the others for a cherry blossom viewing, and continue to gather in the years to come. With the silence growing stronger, Kaoru realizes that Kenshin has died quietly in her arms. Upon brushing his hair off his left cheek, Kaoru notices Kenshin's scar has faded away, signifying an end to his life of pain and bloodshed and commencement to a life of peace. In the final scene before the credits, she holds his head in her arms and weeps.

I am guessing that they wanted to prove that even Kenshin is only human. But other than that I see no reason for them to kill him off.

Its Pure Bas***dization.....Spend the better part of the whole damn series to show what a superhuman godlike warrior Himura is....and then kill him off, robbing him even of a warriors honour, and go like....haha suckers, What did you expect, an inconclusive ending devoid of unnecessary emotional scenes???

They couldnt kill him in  fight because he was a god like warrior who had chosen to abandon his sword.

Killing him in a fight would have defeated the purpose of his abandoning the sword.

But rather than a disease... they could have killed him off due to old age.... and shown a grown up Yahiko and Tsubame visiting his grave with their son or something..... I mean the way they show him in the end is just so..... sad.... doesn't suit him at all..... to die the way he did.....

Yeah to add to that.... they could have made it as a flashback being narrated by Yahiko and Tsubame to his son/daughter or whoever..... and fill in the blanks in Kenshins life with those flashbacks. That would have been perfect (for me)

Or even Kenshins Son and Yahiko could be at the grave with Yahiko telling him about his father (i.e. Kenshin) and his life.

wow.. after 3 years..  8)

I've already said before the ending was stupid.. making him die like some street dog, to create sympathy wave to sell more dvds was so typical.

I always thought Kenshin dying from a disease was a pretty crappy way to end the series.  Glad to see others seem to agree!

Where did this info come from? Granted it's been a while since I've seen the anime but I remember a happy ending...
“Ah, yes, divorce ... from the Latin word meaning to rip out a man's genitals through his wallet.” Robin Williams

“I fear one day I'll meet God, he'll sneeze and I won't know what to say.” Ronnie Shakes
