Haruhi's disillusion with the current world had grown to a point where she was on the verge of subconsciously destroying the current one and creating a new one. Kyon kissed Haruhi to "wake up" and bring her back to the real world.
Someone mentioned that (in the novels) Haruhi decided to wear a ponytail, since Kyon in the "dream" said he liked her in a ponytail. But only for a few hours before she took it off again just to spite Kyon.

Another one. What exactly happened 3 years back? Why did she got fascinated with the idea of aliens, time travellers and ESPers? Where did she get this idea from? I mean there could have been just any other idea which could have interested her. So why just this?

Actually, three years ago, Haruhi got a new obsession to be different and hang around with different people, because her father took her to a baseball match where the stadium was full of people. She thought that if there are so many ordinary People then she wasn't hanging around with the fun and different people. Thus she wanted to hand around and find fun and unique people... maybe better... hand around with and find aliens, espers and time travellers, because they were not common... they can't be found anywhere else...
And do you know why Kyon is the trigger for this... ???
Because three years ago, Kyon (whom haruhi didn't know that time) told her that there was a girl like her in his high school and that she was also pursuing time travellers, espers and aliens.
I can hear you say - "Wait! How did Kyon meet Haruhi three years ago???"
Because, the present Mikuru took Kyon to the three years past and the future Mikuru asked him (when the present Mikuru was asleep) to help Haruhi with whatever she was doing. That's how they met. But Haruhi doesn't clearly remember everything from three years ago, except the fact that there was a girl like her in Kyon's (whom she didn't know that time) high school... who was actually Haruhi's future self (she didn't know about this either).
Thus, the (now) very famous dialog - "Have we met before?" in the First episode of the First Season Chronologically and the Second Episode Non-Chronologically.
By the Way, all details in this spoiler are from the chapter "Bamboo leaf Rahpsody" that is the First Episode of Season two or the Chapters 13 and 14 of the Manga.

I myself subscribe to the first theory where you say "Kyon was the trigger who was supposed to make Haruhi understand that she didn't need to remake the world. Hence, his presence."

She is. I heard some where that in the novels there are more hints to this.
Haruhi is now without doubt attracted to Kyon (By my theory), however, she will not accept and she will not give up. She will not accept because he is ordinary and she will not give up because he resembles like someone whom she met 3 years ago... he has potential to be abnormal by her standards
